A US court has sentenced former Ethereum Foundation researcher Virgil Griffith to more than five years in prison and a $100,000 fine for providing North Korea with information about using cryptos to eave sanctions, according to the notice published on the US Department of Justice.
According to the agency, Griffith has been helping North Korea since 2018 develop its crypto infrastructure.
In April 2019, despite being denied travel permission by the US authorities, he traveled to North Korea to speak at a blockchain conference, where he described how North Korea could use blockchain and cryptos to launder funds and evade sanctions.
The Department of Justice has said that he also planned to help organize a cryptocurrency exchange between North Korea and South Korea.
