The European Parliament has voted in favor of a bill on a digital identity system by a majority of 418 to 103, with 24 abstentions.
The proposed system, which involves the use of zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) to protect the privacy of EU citizens, would create a digital wallet for each citizen that would allow them to store and manage their identification data and access public services.
Socialist MEP Romana Jerkovic has stressed the importance of the system adhering to the EU General Data Protection Regulation. Negotiations with the Council of Europe will now take place to discuss possible amendments.
