Dmitry Kalechits, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the National Bank of Belarus, stated that the National Bank is working on launching a digital version of the Belarusian ruble.
He reported that, due to the sanctions affecting Belarus and the restricted access to global payment systems, a CBDC (central bank digital currency) could be especially valuable for cross-border payments.
Kalechits reported that the digital ruble would have the same worth as cash and non-cash national currency, and would fulfill all the functions of money.
In April, a national digital currency concept was developed and approved, and the regulator then began creating a pilot platform for the currency.
