Worldcoin, the identity-focused crypto project co-founded by Sam Altman, has confirmed the temporary suspension of its services in Kenya due to a recent suspension notice.
Kenya was a significant market for the project, where orb-shaped devices scanned people’s irises to verify their uniqueness online, offering them a share of the cryptocurrency WLD as an incentive.
The overwhelming demand for verification services in Kenya, with tens of thousands of individuals waiting in lines for a World ID, led to the decision to temporarily pause services. During this pause, the team will develop an onboarding program with improved crowd control measures and collaborate with local officials to ensure understanding of Worldcoin’s privacy measures and commitments.
Despite the suspension, Worldcoin intends to work with regulators and stakeholders to resume its services in Kenya in the future.
