Reuters reported that Middle Eastern terrorist organizations have been using the Tron blockchain for fundraising in the years 2021-2023, highlighting a report from Israel’s National Bureau for Combating Terrorist Financing (NBCTF).
After analyzing the report, journalists discovered that of the 143 addresses that were frozen by authorities, 87 belonged to Hezbollah and the remaining 56 were controlled by Hamas.
These groups utilized the Tron network due to its lower transaction fees compared to Bitcoin and Ethereum. In 2019, the Tron project in China faced similar accusations, with allegations that it was supporting underground casinos.
There have also been reports in the media of criminal organizations in China using Tron. Founder Justin Sun denies these accusations and tweeted this week that the Tron network is no different from BTC and ETH in terms of security and decentralization.
While developers are unable to track the movement of funds on the network, they are working to prevent the inflow of criminal capital.
