The total amount of cryptocurrency held in the Bitcoin micropayment network Lightning Network (LN) has reached a new all-time high of $312.4 million. This is a 30% increase in value over the past 30 days, driven by a surge in the value of digital gold.

In terms of actual bitcoins held in LN channels, there was a slight decrease of about 5% in the last month, with 4566 BTC currently locked in the network.

This is about 17% less than the highest amount held in April 2023. The number of nodes on LN has remained relatively steady in recent months, ranging between 16,000 and 18,000. However, the number of channels is steadily decreasing and the percentage of reused channels remains below 10%.

In September 2023, Lightspark CEO and former head of Meta blockchain division David Marcus stated that LN could revolutionize the resource-intensive process of international money transfers and bring global payments out of the era of fax technology.
