Tornado Cash developer Alexey Pertsev has been convicted on charges of money laundering.
A Dutch court found Pertsev, 31, guilty of laundering $1.2 billion in cryptocurrency through the Tornado Cash mixer between July 9, 2019, and August 10, 2022, as reported by DL News. A three-judge panel sentenced Pertsev to five years and four months in prison.
One of the judges reportedly stated, “Tornado Cash in its nature and functioning is a tool intended for criminals.” Pertsev’s legal team has 14 days to appeal the decision.
Pertsev is among several individuals targeted for their roles in developing Tornado Cash. In the United States, the platform’s co-founder, Roman Storm, faces similar charges for his involvement in the development of the controversial software.
Storm’s trial is set to take place before a federal court in New York this September.
