The Libertarian Party’s convention, which was addressed by former President Donald Trump, drew boos and jeers from the audience throughout the unprecedented event.
Trump, the current leading candidate for the Republican Party, made his first address to the convention of a rival party.
Despite receiving a mixed reaction to his policy pronouncements and promises to appoint Libertarians to cabinet and senior positions, Trump gained significant support when he briefly mentioned his pledge to support the crypto industry and commute the sentence of Ross Ulbricht on day one of his potential presidency.
The crowd erupted in cheers, with many holding signs that read “Free Ross!” Ulbricht, who is currently serving a life sentence for his involvement in Silk Road, a dark web marketplace integral to Bitcoin’s early history, has been a favorite cause among many Libertarian Party members.
Trump’s pledge to commute his sentence, a first for a major candidate from either the Republican or Democratic party, was met with enthusiastic response from the audience.
