In recent forfeiture actions by the US Attorney for the District of Columbia, new information has been revealed about the methods used by North Korean crypto hackers to launder their stolen funds.

The US government is seeking to seize approximately $2.67 million worth of cryptocurrency that was taken in two major hacks.

The complaints, initially submitted on Friday, are attempting to recover $1.7 million worth of Tether (USDT) that was traced through the Tornado Cash mixer following the $28 million theft from crypto options exchange Deribit in November 2022.

In addition, about 15.5 Avalanche-bridged Bitcoin (BTC.b) worth approximately $971,000 at current rates were also taken in the hackers’ $41 million attack on online crypto casino Stake.com.

The first filing presents details on how the Lazarus Group, a North Korean-linked group, laundered money from the Deribit hack through the crypto mixer Tornado Cash.
