The Bavarian Data Protection Authority, known as BayLDA, recently completed an investigation into Worldcoin and found that the crypto project’s processing of biometric data does not meet the standards set by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
As a result, BayLDA is requiring Worldcoin to implement a compliant data deletion procedure within the next 30 days.
In a statement, BayLDA’s president Michael Will emphasized the importance of protecting user rights and stated that all Worldcoin users will now have the ability to exercise their right to have their data erased. In response to this decision, Worldcoin has filed an appeal.
The crypto company argues that its anonymization technologies are crucial for data protection in the age of artificial intelligence. However, a spokesperson for the World Foundation expressed concerns about the lack of a clear definition of anonymization within the GDPR framework.
In an effort to ease tensions, Worldcoin has announced that it will delete its old system by May 2024, including all stored data. However, BayLDA has stated that certain illegally collected records still need to be deleted. This highlights the issue of user rights, which is of particular importance in the crypto ecosystem.
