Investment firm Metaplanet, which is based in Japan, has recently made its largest-ever purchase of Bitcoin, acquiring nearly 620 Bitcoin as the cryptocurrency’s value dropped below $100,000.
The announcement was made on December 23rd, with the firm purchasing 619.7 Bitcoin for approximately $60 million when the price of Bitcoin was around $96,000. This purchase surpassed their previous record of 159.7 Bitcoin, which was bought on October 28th.
According to data from Bitbo, this purchase nearly quadrupled the value of their previous record. Due to their significant Bitcoin purchases, Metaplanet has been nicknamed “Asia’s MicroStrategy”, after the American firm known for investing in Bitcoin.
With this latest purchase, the firm now holds a total of 1,762 BTC, worth approximately $168 million. Their average purchase price per BTC is around $75,600. This new acquisition has also brought Metaplanet to the 12th spot on the list of public companies with the largest Bitcoin holdings, just behind Semler Scientific, a medical tech manufacturer.
