The South Korean government has taken action against 15 individuals and one organization from North Korea for their involvement in illegal cyber activities, specifically cryptocurrency thefts.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, these individuals are part of Bureau 313, a group under the Workers’ Party of Korea’s Machine-Building Industry Department, which oversees the country’s production of weapons and ballistic missiles and has been under UN sanctions since 2016.

The ministry also stated that North Korean IT personnel have been sent to various countries as government affiliates to secure work orders from IT companies and may also be involved in information theft and cyberattacks.

While confirming that some of the sanctioned individuals have stolen cryptocurrencies through hacks, the ministry declined to reveal their identities.
