The Mexican authorities intended to launch a national digital currency by 2024, according to the post on social networks published in January last year by the country’s president Andres Manuel López Obrador.
However, the central bank of the country has decided to move the deadlines, as it will not be able to issue a digital peso within the next 12 months. The regulator has not yet announced a new date.
According to the press service of the central bank:
“Initially, it is necessary to prepare the project budget, which is currently being formed. This will allow us to set a new release date for the CBDC.”
It was originally planned to issue a token on the PagoCel platform. Moreover, its users could make transactions with digital pesos in the form of a regular bank transfer through any mobile device.
