Borneo Confiscates Illegal Crypto Miners

Responding to a tip from members of the public, authorities in the town of Miri on the island of Borneo shut down an illegal cryptocurrency mining operation, confiscating 34 servers and tapping cables that had been used to steal electricity.

The operation was estimated to have cost Sarawak Energy, a Malaysian utility, around 6,000 Malaysian ringgits ($1300) per month; the utility noted in a statement that although energy prices are low in the region, energy theft continues to be a problem.

This is the second time in the past two years that authorities in Senadin, where Miri is located, have seized such equipment; in 2023, over 137 cryptocurrency mining servers were confiscated.
