Roman Storm, co-founder of cryptocurrency mixer Tornado Cash, has been recently released on bail, as announced by his lawyer, Brian Klein.
Klein has stated that the approach taken by Storm’s accusers has “dangerous consequences” for all software developers. He also stated that Storm had been cooperating with authorities since 2022 and has denied any criminal activity.
On August 23, Storm was arrested; another defendant in the case, Roman Semenov, was charged in absentia. Both were charged with conspiracy to launder money, violate restrictions, and conduct unlicensed business.
The U.S. Treasury’s OFAC added the Tornado Cash website to the sanction list in August 2022, claiming it was used to launder more than $7 billion worth of cryptocurrencies, $455 million of them related to North Korean hacker group Lazarus Group.
Earlier in the year, Dutch authorities arrested developer Alexey Pertsev on suspicion of involvement in money laundering and concealing criminal financial flows.
He has denied all accusations against him, and in April 2023 the court changed his preventive measure to house arrest.
