Authorities in Thailand conducted a raid on an illegal Bitcoin mining facility in Ratchaburi, a town located west of Bangkok.
This action was taken in response to numerous complaints from residents about frequent power outages in the area.
According to reports from the South China Morning Post, the raid took place on Aug. 23 and revealed that the illegal mining activities were the likely cause of the blackouts that had been occurring for over a month.
An investigation was launched after residents reported experiencing unexplained power failures starting in mid-July. The Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), in collaboration with local law enforcement, traced the source of the electricity drain to a single house.
Upon further inspection, it was discovered that the house was being used as a base for Bitcoin mining.
Jamnong Chanwong, the chief security officer for the district, reported that the house’s electricity consumption was unusually high, but the payments made for the electricity were surprisingly low.
